share your love for the swapp family

Part of cultivating a good life is mourning with those that mourn.

I’m not sure I will ever forget the moment I learned the news. So many of us have felt shock and sadness over what has happened to the Swapp family in these past few days. Heidi and Eric Swapp’s 16-year-old son Cory (that handsome kid behind her left shoulder in this picture) passed away very unexpectedly… and there are almost no words.

[ obituary ]

Except, sometimes, I believe that words can mean something. Words of comfort and love and hope and support. Which is why we wanted to put something together for the Swapp family that may, in even the very smallest way, bring comfort over the coming weeks, months, and years. Nothing can take away the sting and the sorrow that they must be feeling, but to know that they are so very loved is indeed a help to Heidi and her family during this very tender time.

In Heidi’s own words: “I don’t know how my heart can be so broken, and yet so full. The last couple of days have been the saddest of my whole life. I don’t know how I can possibly thank you ALL for the TREMENDOUS OUTPOURING of LOVE, and hope and faith and compassion for me and my family. I could not be more grateful. It’s so humbling. I could’t possibly respond to all the messages – but I have read them, and I have been touched, and strengthened. In this darkest difficult time, I do have HOPE in my Savior. I trust. We feel the LOVE for sure. Life is so precious. This boy was loved so deeply by so many. Again, I thank you humbly.”

At Cory’s viewing and funeral this week, we are putting 4×4 cards out for loved ones to write messages to the Swapp family and then we’ll compile these into an 8×8 album (or however many albums we fill). But instead of limiting this “group hug” to just those in attendance, we wanted anyone, anywhere to have the opportunity to contribute to this. The idea is that the Swapps will have something tangible to hold in their hands. Something they can flip through as they read messages upon messages of encouragement and love from family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, and even strangers. Basically anyone and everyone who wants to express their condolences.

what you can do

1. Write your message on a 4″ x 4″ card or piece of paper. Share a quote or scripture or message of hope / encouragement / faith / whatever you feel in your heart to share. Be sure to include your name somewhere on the card and even your city and state/country if you’d like.

2. Mail this 4×4 card, as soon as you are able, to:

Becky Higgins LLC

8514 W. Deer Valley Rd.

Suite 110

Peoria, AZ  85382

Simple as that! We will combine all of the cards we receive at our office with those that are from the viewing and funeral this week. We will certainly allow time for your cards to arrive over the next couple weeks, and we know some of you will be sending them from outside the U.S. We will give the 8×8 album(s) to the Swapp family to keep forever, with a prayer that these messages will bring some bit of comfort to each one of them.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for participating and contributing. This community is incredible. I know so many of you admire and adore Heidi. I love her dearly. We had an instant connection when we met so many years ago and we’ve enjoyed collaborating in our creative work with product development, but more importantly — she is a woman with a heart of gold. She’s the real deal. A wonderful wife and mother and friend. And a beautiful example to me. I know in my heart of hearts that Heidi’s faith in Jesus Christ is very much significant in what will carry her through this deepest trial. I share that faith as well and am so grateful for the knowledge that families can be together eternally. Death is not the end.

My heart hurts so deeply for Heidi and her family. Our small farming community is still mourning the loss of two teens this past school year. It’s such a devasting loss and leaves so many feeling helpless. I love that you’ve found a way for all of us to reach out to them. Thank you for organizing this act of love and kindness and allowing us to share in it.

  18. cheryl marshall says:

I think this will be very helpful to them. I lost my oldest son a little over 4 years ago, just before he would have turned 30. A good friend of his set up a memorial FB page that I read quite often. The comments, stories, pictures that his friends post, have helped me tremendously since he passed. I was shocked by the number of people our son knew, and how many lives he touched. We stood for hours at the funeral (a viewing wasn’t possible) and listened to the stories of how our son helped others. The funeral home had to stay open even longer, to allow his military buddies time to arrive, as well. I’ll never forget how many people he touched, and continues to do so til this day. I’m sure the Swapp family will be touched by many as well. Even though Cory was only 16, I’m sure he meant so much to so many people. They may not read the books right away, but when they do, it’s going to help them so much.

  19. Suse Fish says:

Hearts around the world ache with just imagining what Heidi and her family are going through. I pray that God holds each of their hands very tightly indeed.

  20. Debby J says:

I sit here reading the comments with tears running down my face. I know the hurt of losing both parents and almost losing my son at the same age as Heidi’s. The hurt is there and hopefully, years will help Heidi and her family get over this horrible lose. Thank you Becky for your hard work in organizing the albums for the Swapp family-I am sure they will appreciate it.

  21. Eveline says:

It just breaks my heart to hear of this. I’m sending my deepest condolences to Heidi, her family and all of those that were blessed enough to be a part of and touched by the life of her son. May God overwhelm them Comfort, Strength and a Peace that surpasses all understanding.

And thank you Becky and team for this wonderful idea. My card will be in the mail tomorrow. They will be able to look back on these albums in the months and years to come, and prayerfully be comforted and strengthened by the outpouring of love from those known and unknown.

With love and my deepest sympathy,
    Marcy from Illinois

  24. Ellan says:

I too can’t stop thinking , hurting, and crying for this family tragedy since I heard the news last Thursday.
I’ve also lost not a kid but someone who was (is) the most important person in my life, after my kids (only losing one of them could be worse), and know how much it hurts, how words don’t help and, sometimes, they make us feel more alone and not understood. People have good intentions, for sure, but unless they’ve gone through the same kind of loss (which is absolutely different to any other loss) they cannot understand nor help. You need to be listened, and allowed to cry. You don’t have “to be strong” for your kids, you have the right to feel whatever you feel, and act as you want to or need to. Twelve years on and I still cry, and still count the months since his passing (151 yesterday). It’s not a matter of time. But you, slowly, learn to cope. And you learn that you must enjoy everything you still have even more because now you know how it feels to lose them.
When asked:”How can I help you?” I answer: “Can you bring him back? No? Well then you can’t help me. Just be by my side and let me talk and cry. Please, don’t say anything”.
I hope Heidi will read the “Bill of Rights” for grievers in the obituary’s website. It’s excellent.
She’s already been through tough times with her youngest boy who suffers from Sensory Processing Disorder, and now she must face this tragedy. My heart goes to her and her whole family.
    Love.
    Ellan, from Florida

  25. Ellan says:

I forgot to thank you, Becky, for giving us this space, and for the wonderful cards idea.
I’ve read all the comments and they are all so filled with love for this family that if/when they read them, they will surely feel the outpouring of sympathy the whole world is sending them.

P.S.: Sorry, as you can see, I’m awful at making long stories short.

  26. KarenF says:

What a wonderful idea, Becky, and thank you for including all of us! I took a couple of classes from Heidi when she taught at Scrapbooks Etc. in Mesa, AZ several years back now, and found her to be such a wonderful person. I’ll be sending my card soon. My heart aches for her and her family; my daughter is 15 and I can’t imagine how much they must be hurting right now. If you and your team need some help in assembling what I imagine will be many books, I am just across town and would be more than happy to help out in any way I can.

I don;t know Heidi I am new to SU and have not really done Project Life but the fact that she is part of SU then she is part of a great Family. I am from Florida and I send my condolences to the family a loss whether expected or not is still a loss that you can’t conceive. May the Lord watch over you and your family at this time of sorrow. Know that everyone is surrounding you all in their Love and strength. I will be sending my card out.

  29. Barb Horner says:

I met Heidi in Vegas some years back and she was a sweet person. She took the time to have her picture taken with me and my friends. This is very sad to read this. My son died 27 hours after he was born during heart surgery. This was 25 years ago this week. My other two children filled my life and gave me something to live for. Although, my heart will always have a empty space in it, which will not be filled again until I meet him in Heaven. My prayers to Heidi and her family and wishing them peace during this very sad time.

  30. Ruth Gauss says:

Thank you so much, Becky, for giving those who have been touched by Heidi’s wonderful nature a chance to give back just a tiny bit for all she’s given. I appreciate the opportunity!

  40. Caroline Louth says:

What can one say ~ it beggars belief! I do know that families are forever, though, and your boy must have been very special for his life here on earth to have been so tragically cut short. I hope your family can draw strength, courage & comfort knowing that he has a more important work than on this earth & that you will be reunited to hold him in your arms once again one day. I don’t know you but, as a mother, I share in your grief. I don’t live even in the same country as you but the world becomes a smaller place because of the need I (and many others) feel to reach out & comfort you. What can I say? I feel words are inadequate but I hope knowing people care helps in the difficult days ahead Xx
