hide & seek

Flashback to nearly a year ago.

It was a warm Thursday in Arizona and some of my dearest friends were visiting from out of town for our friend’s wedding. We went to one of our favorite local restaurants for a bite to eat and I brought a little something along — a Project Life® Core Kit. We placed the kit under this sign, snapped a picture, I shared it on social media, and … that was how #BHhideandseek began!

For this very first hide & seek, I was actually there. When this sweet woman pulled up, got out of her car, and found the box, we greeted her with hugs and enjoyed chatting long enough that a couple other “seekers” showed up, too.

This little tradition that we started last year is something we don’t intend to retire anytime soon! Since then we have played hide & seek in about 110 locations – mostly in the U.S., but a few have been in other countries as well. And we even did 50 in one day with the help of our Stampin’ Up! friends – one for every state – last August.

Why do we do it?

It’s one small way we feel we can give back to our loyal customers. Whether you’ve been familiar with my work long before I started a company, or you’re new this year … we appreciate you so much and believe whole-heartedly that you are the reason we do what we do, day in and day out.

How does it work?

We have “Hide & Seek Fairies” all over the place — friends, family, colleagues, Creative Team members — who live in various places and are delighted to participate. Our team coordinates with them on an individual basis and we plan ahead when each person will place the kit. I personally sign every kit and it is shipped to our friend, who then picks any public location to place the kit.

Several hours before we announce that specific location, I share a “heads-up” map graphic on social media that gives people a general idea of where it’s happening next as I specify the city. Then our friend places the kit at his or her convenience, sends the pictures to me along with the specific location, I do the social sharing, and whoever gets there first, gets the prize! It’s completely up to our friends whether or not they stay to meet whoever shows up. Many of my family members have participated (several times it has been while they’re traveling) and for the most part, they stick around to meet the winners. I continue to personally place a kit from time to time.

Every hide & seek has a story.

Robyn Bomar was our hide & seek fairy in New York City on September 11, 2014. We chose that day because we wanted to show NYC our love on the anniversary that brings about tender feelings for so many. Robyn placed the kit at the famous Bryant Park and stayed and watched things unfold. She waited patiently as two men sat at a table directly in front of the “hidden” kit and panicked a little as birds descended on bread crumbs left by the two eating their lunch. After about 20 minutes, a man came up quickly and claimed the kit! His wife saw our post on social media and called him, asking that he go to the park on his lunch break. Perfect timing! And what a great husband! Robyn added her own bit of happiness to the prize in the form of a t-shirt and gift card on behalf of her own organization The Birthday Project. What a special Hide and Seek that was!

Hide & Seek happens on social media, so if you want to follow along and also be the first to see new product announcements and our other fun social sharing, you can find these happenings on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

So… what’s next for Hide & Seek? You never know! Yesterday we sprinkled the love near Portland, Oregon. Next week we’re going to be half-way across the United States. It shouldn’t be long before we’re showing up in another country again. We’ve covered London and even Hong Kong. We hope to be in a city near YOU! Thanks for playing along!
