Cultivate a good life and record it.

good life – by lauren lundevall

Part of cultivating a good life is stepping outside of myself and noticing the world around me.

Being a teenage girl in this day and age, I face the challenge of going up against the world everyday. I wake up every morning and look in the mirror and see imperfections. But when I look a little deeper, I can see that it’s not about whether or not I will be accepted by “the flow” of the world. It’s not about my clothes matching, that my hair is in style, or that my lips are perfectly lined with the right gloss. There’s something deeper. It’s about shining eyes, a bright smile, a healthy body, and my ability to serve.

I once read a quote saying, “Perfection is a flaw.” The world’s vision of perfection is perfect skin, perfect grades, the perfect body, and stainless clothes. But what no one knows is it’s not real. So why does it matter? Along with questioning myself in the back of my mind, I don’t understand why anyone would want to “go with the flow.” That’s where being yourself comes in.

My favorite thing to wear is my smile. I’ve come to realize that it’s the best medicine — even when you’re not feeling emotionally sick. No matter what I’m doing, I give 200% with the best attitude I can. Being happy with myself brings me peace and comfort. Because I’m satisfied with who I am, I can more openly notice the world around me. It’s tragic and beautiful and challenging and wondrous. And sometimes it’s hard to see it. But when you get the chance, it’s worth it. That’s when everything begins to matter a little more.

There’s no reason not to enjoy life. There’s no reason not to smile. Everything gets better when you’re focusing on the positive. The grass may seem greener on the other side, but it’s greenest where you water it. Forget the past, focus on the now, and make the future your happy place.

You are beautiful by what you stand for and what makes you stand out — not by the amount of make-up you have on or the brand of clothes you wear. So put a smile on that face and love the life you live. Don’t be afraid to step outside of yourself because when you do, you’ll see that the world around you is a beautiful thing.

 Note from Becky

Would you believe me if I told you that Lauren is just 15 years old? Yes, she wrote all of that. Yes, she is pretty much amazing. We are surrounded by so many fantastic youth in our area and Lauren is one of many young women who has left an impression on me. I know her from church. She has watched our kids a few times while David and I went out for date night. You can gather from her writing that Lauren’s faith is quite strong. She’s the real deal. She lives her faith and exudes light to those around her and I love her for that.
