Pocket Scrapbooking with Project Life

Cultivate a good life and record it.

good life by devin pitcher

Part of cultivating a good life is having dreams.

Well, really it’s more than just having dreams…everyone has dreams. But we forget them or tuck them away somewhere. We go into survival mode and we can barely keep up with the demands of “right now.” That’s okay; we all do that. But don’t let it crowd out the things you really want.

If you feel stuck in a situation, don’t give up hope. Situations change in ways you don’t expect. When my wife and I were in college, I spent many years working in restaurants as a cook. I desperately wanted to get a job in the computer industry but only had experience in the food industry. After many rejections, I felt ready to give up. I was tired of being rejected and I was doubting whether I was really cut out for the computer industry. Finally one day, right before my senior year, my wife told me I had a job interview at the Space Dynamics Lab, a place I’d applied at I don’t know how many times. I hadn’t applied this time — she had applied for me without telling me. That job changed everything. I was excited to go to work everyday and excited for the future.

I’ve learned that I really have to believe in myself to get where I want to be, but it’s so nice to have others around you who believe in you. My wife has always been supportive of my crazy ideas. Usually it all makes sense in my head but sounds ridiculous coming out of my mouth. Even so, she encourages me to go for it. Seven years ago I convinced her that we should buy a little Mac Mini computer and an iPod Touch so I could develop an iPhone app. My argument was that the app would pay for itself. Well, it didn’t and neither did the next one, but with each failure I learned things. A few years and crazy ideas later, that investment did pay off.

Try not to miss opportunities that will get you closer to your dream even if the opportunity scares you to death. I’ve noticed my kids have no problem telling me when they’re scared to do something. I usually tell them that there’s nothing wrong with being afraid as long as it doesn’t stop them from doing what they really want to do. Leaving a good job to start my own business was one of those scared-to-death moments for me. It’s still scary at times, but I don’t regret it. I’m another step closer to my dreams.

Note from Becky

Would it be weird if I told you that I felt a bit weepy (and proud!) when I read Devin’s words for the first time? Devin means so much to our team and, of course, I relate so, so, so much to this message that he has shared. I am so very grateful that he has chased his dreams – and that his awesome wife encouraged him along the way – because that’s how we have been able to collaborate with Devin! Most of you may not realize who he is to us, so it’s important that I draw attention to the fact that Devin is our app developer. He is THAT guy who took our crazy app idea and made it a reality! So if you have and use and love the Project Life® app, well, you kind of want to give him a hug right now, right? We get it.  ; )

Hooray for dream chasers bringing our worlds together to help others.

Thank you Devin, for plugging away at your dream and creating an app that is now in the hands of countless people everyday. It is so intuitive, easy and fun. You have a good brain for this work. So happy you (and your wife) had the persistence, patience and courageous pluck to cultivate your dreams into reality. Yay you!

Thank you for chasing your dreams. The Project Life App has been a dream come true in my life. It has made scrapbooking possible for me again. There are no words to adequately express what that means to me. No more guilt or feeling behind all the time. Thank you, Devin and Becky!

Devin (and Becky), I wouldn’t be able to continue my twenty-five year love affair with scrapbooking if it weren’t for the two of you and this wonderful app. I love the computer and saw the possibilities for digital scrapbooking all the way back in 2002, when Word was my go to program for putting my pages together. After getting my feet wet doing graphic design as an admin assistant, I went to school in my forties to get a graphic design degree. and even opened a (very) small graphic design business. I got to live my dream for a couple of years when I suddenly had some kind of a brain injury (that no specialist can figure out) and my life came to a complete stop. I had to give up every other activity, but I could still scrapbook. With a dedicated physiatrist, my brain is near normal, but I’m now suffering with arm and hand issues that prevent me from using a laptop. If I didn’t have this app, my love of scrapbooking would have come to an end. Since you released it, I can now scrapbook to my heart’s content, without pain, and continue to preserve our family’s memories. I really can’t thank either of you enough for following your hearts and taking a chance on your dreams so that I can continue creating mine. Thank you!
