Becky Higgins – Becky & Kari Do Australia + Re-cap Video!

I had the privilege of visiting Australia again recently. This time my product manager Kari joined me and man, she’s an awesome travel companion and a very dear friend, so we had a blast! You’ll also catch glimpses of our friend Elizabeth Kartchner (a.k.a. Dear Lizzy) who was there too, but always at different store locations. Many thanks to our friends at Caprice Australia and Spotlight and American Crafts for arranging and hosting the visit. You’ll also see Bob and Brian — they were our personal transportation / tour guides and literally sorted out every single detail. They got us everywhere we needed to be, when we needed to be there. Driving, flying … all of it. They are highly organized (my love language) and such kind, professional, FUN men!

We were on 11 different planes in our 10-day journey, touching down in 5 major cities and visiting 11 different Spotlight locations. For those of you less familiar, Spotlight is a major retailer there and we are fortunate that they carry our Project Life® products. Touring Australia like this is a total whirlwind experience. We were not really in any one place for much time at all, but we did our best to soak in the scenery — and especially the people. Kari and I absolutely loved visiting with many of our customers Down Under! To all of you who came out to meet us and spend time together … thank you. We absolutely loved connecting with you!

Each time I travel I find the documenter in me wanting to come out and play. Sometimes my focus is more on the pictures. Sometimes more of the written word. Sometimes video. This time it was all about video! I took a handful of photos (and yes, they’re already scrapbooked with the Project Life App as part of our family yearbook), but really I began this trip with the “end in mind” and had a vision for a complete video that would be the documentation of our journey. I knew I would film the entire experience with the phone that’s always on me (I use the iPhone 6 Plus) and no other fancy equipment. I knew I’d stitch the whole thing together with iMovie — an app also right there in my phone. So essentially, the whole thing was done in the palm of my hand! Totally my love language. I chipped away on creating the video mostly in two places — in the car and on the plane. Because we spent a LOT of time in those two places.

DISCLAIMER: I really thought I could keep this video under 5 minutes. Ha! So, so, so funny. It’s about 30 minutes long — yikes. But you know what? If you ever wanted to feel like you were traveling right there with us, this video will do the trick. It’s 100% behind-the-scenes footage of everything from the wonderful people we met and our car karaoke and other shenanigans, to some of the local tastes and of course stunning Australian scenery. It’s little stuff. It’s big stuff. It’s … Becky and Kari do Australia!

That is fabulous. Has given me an idea for my next trip away. But what I was wondering, is what do you do with the movie now ? – Do you keep it on your IPhone or just delete it because you have a copy of it on YouTube?

I’ve always wanted to go to Australia. Now I feel like I’ve been there. Thanks for sharing, Becky!

  6. Ooh! I am so happy to see Joondalup got a look in! :) I was thrilled to meet you then, Becky.

Our eldest children (7 & 4) were sad they couldn’t come to meet you, but we watched your periscope later on and they now call Joondalup, Jindaloop ;)

Thanks for sharing this video! Looked like a fun trip!
I love Kari’s backpack. What brand is it?

Thank you for sharing this. Even though it was long ;) I’m glad I took the time to watch it. This year is the first time I’ve really embraced documenting life through video. I am doing the 1 Second Everyday project and LOVE IT. But that has led to me taking more video in general and using video to document certain trips, etc. in that manner. Your video was great inspiration of different ideas, aspects of life/travel, angles, etc.
I would love to see a blog post that details your process a little bit. It was obvious you had to “prop” your phone up a lot and maybe stage some moments (like getting out of a cab, as an example). I’m curious how you went about some of this, how many weird looks you got (ha!) and if you ever got into trouble! (I really wanted to take a one second video in a casino but was forewarned by my travelling companion that you can NOT do that!!)

This video was so awesome. Thanks for sharing. I absolutely adore Kari’s backpack. Could she share the brand and possible where it was purchased?
