travel photography tips

Summer oftentimes = travel season. So in light of this, I am sharing this video with some photography tips to keep in mind the next time you hit the road, travel abroad, book a stay-cation, or enjoy a holiday away from home. These tips are applicable across the board, regardless of your next destination.

This is actually something I compiled last October when David and I traveled to Italy. We relaxed, we played, we walked (a lot), and as usual, I snapped pictures along the way – just like I usually do when we travel. But this time, I actually paid attention to what I was taking pictures of and how I was taking those pictures, and we filmed the tips right there in Italy – just for you guys. Sort of a last-minute thought, actually, so this isn’t exactly the most professional quality.

Any holy cow – don’t mind how my hair reacted to that humidity – oh my stars!

Thanks for sharing! Going to use this video to sway my husband to leave the DSLR at home this Fall when we travel to Spain. P.S. Love the delicate taupe-colored scarf you’re wearing in Rome (about 6:30 in the video). It looks like you’re outside the Pantheon, maybe?

  2. Loved this so much! Makes me want to go back to Italy right now. ;) Wonderful video, Becky!

  5. Susan says:

Thank you for this video. Your suggestions are great. We are going on a river boat cruise in France in a couple of months. Not sure I can leave the dslr behind, but may use the iPhone more too now.

  6. Jesse Harper says:

Thank you so much. If for nothing else but to know that I don’t need to lug around my big camera everywhere I go. Your pictures and creative advise were perfect.

  7. Suzette says:

Wow, Becky! Amazing tips! What made you think to do that while you were in Italy? Did you have the plan before you went? (Of course you did–begin with the end in mind!) And, did David use his iPhone to capture you? We are going on vacation this Saturday (not Italy but family reunion at Lake Erie) and I am going to use many of these tips. We make this trip every 2-3 years but it will be fun to capture our memories with “fresh” eyes. ;-)

  8. Mary Nida says:

Thank you Becky! This taught me a lot about using my iPhone for photos but for the self photos does the phone have a timer? I do not know? Thank you again and in advance for the reply

  17. Sandy says:

Thanks for sharing these tips. I tend to do a mix of iphone and big camera photos. Just can’t bear to leave the big camera at home! But I really appreciated these tips (of course some of which can apply to big cameras too) and showing how you can definitely capture good photographs from an international trip simply using your phone camera.

  18. Julie Bodenheimer says:

Hi Becky! Any chance you could include a link to the tripod you are using in this video? Thank you so much for the fantastic tips!!

  21. Tiffany H says:

Such fantastic tips! Thanks for sharing. Would love a video about the next step you take with your photos–editing. What app do you use, what settings do you use, etc. I’m amazed at the great quality photos you get with your iPhone. I still use my point & shoot since I don’t think my phone takes as great of photos. But then, it’s probably user error. hahaha

  22. Beth Threlfall says:

We lived in Italy, and have visited several times since returning home,.. I wish I had your tips then, but will definitely be using in the future!!! Thank you for sharing some awesome photos!

  23. Kelly M. says:

Great info. I’ve been knocking around the idea of leaving my canon 7D at home when we go to Italy and France in Oct. Now after watching this, I think I will leave my baby home and take only my iPhone and perhaps my wifi enabled samsung small but mighty camera. Great pics and tips.. Thanks for sharing…

  24. Susie says:

Speaking of holy Cow! I can’t get over the fact you can press your screen to focus the camera on your iPhone. I had no idea! I only have 4s so it may not work but such a great tip! Loved it all. Thank you.

  25. Darlene P. says:

Thank you Becky for sharing these tips. I plan on trying them out this weekend using my IPhone and see how I do. I’m not traveling but will take photos around town and they should make for an interesting weekly spread in my Project Life album.

  26. Christine says:

We are planning a trip to Europe next May and I am struggling to leave my DSLR at home as I want to have all the luxury of what my “fancy” camera and lenses have to offer…however, I don’t want to lug it all over Europe for 3 weeks. I was wandering if you have researched or know of anyone who has used the IPro lenses of the Olloclip 4 in 1 for your iphone? Also, do you or your brother Kevin know of any iphone apps that give you the ability to recreate the DSLR lenses/camera settings? My husband encountered a European tourist in Zion NP this week and he had an app he was using but he wasn’t willing to share what it was…kind of odd since he sure bragged it up.

  27. Stacy says:

    Incredible ideas. Thanks so much!

  28. Amanda says:

Great tips, most of them are suitable for everyday life too!
One thing though: Surely there’s a middle ground somewhere between DSLR and Iphone?! Just take a smaller camera: I always use my point-and-shoot. It fits in my pocket and makes múch better photos than any smartphone camera (and doesn’t require me to tap in my password for every photo…).

    • Jessica says:

You don’t have to enter your password to take a photo – just swipe up to open the camera. You will have to enter your password before you go to the camera roll, but it will save them. As long as you use the main camera and not the back camera an iphone gets really good pictures. All of my last vacation pictures were taken with it and I was very pleased with how they turned out.

  29. Ana Liza says:

    Wonderful tips!
Some of them I do already but with my bulky camera.
Now I will just persuade myself to use a camera phone when we travel :)
    Thanks so much!

  30. Jennifer says:

Great photographs and great tips, brings back our trip to Italy a few years back. I like the idea of using just your iPhone, so reduce bulky/heavy items to carry with you all day when you’re trying to sightsee.

  31. Joni says:

Thank you soo much for sharing! I absolutely love photography and I am a teenager and a bit new getting into it. So, I was wondering if you would do a post about what camera equipment you have, and some of the modes you put your camera on to get it to blur the background, any helpful tips,(etc..). I would defintely appreciate it! Thank You, Joni.

    • Toni Chase Toni Chase says:

Hi Joni! Becky primarily uses her iPhone 5s for the majority of her photos! She then edits them in Pic-Tap-Go. Hope that helps! ~ Toni @ Becky Higgins

  32. Stephanie in Corralitos says:

Thanks for making this video and sharing your tips. We were in Italy last fall at many of the same places you were and I only took my P&S camera (my old phone took horrible photos). I got great shots by employing some of the same techniques you did. I also “caught some flack” for not taking my dSLR. My argument was that it was my vacation and my photos. I’m glad I’m in good company.

  33. Jen S says:

    Cool video Becky!!

  34. Karla Endris says:

Thanks so much , this is so helpful! I will be trying out some of these tips next week at the Stampin’ UP! convention! Can’t wait to see you there!

  35. Michelle Laulu says:

Thank you so much for the great tips. I feel a little more at ease now with just using my Iphone on vacation and leaving the dslr at home. I really enjoyed the video!

  36. Anita says:

Love this video! Thanks for sharing so many great tips! We recently went to Italy too and although I did take my “big camera”, we used our iPhones most of the time. Still very happy with all of the pics we got. Now I just need to get one of those Gorillapods so I can get some better self portraits! :)

  37. Heather R says:

One of your best videos! Thanks!

  38. Nicole says:

So awesome, Becky! And in watching you take your pictures, I must mention an iPhone trick that I just learned. Maybe I’m the only one that didn’t know this, but did you know that you can take photos with the volume buttons??!! So life changing in the ease of taking photos!!

  39. Wow Becky.. I never would have guessed you only used your phone for those pix… AMAAAZING! Thank you for the tips and thank you for the mini-vacation to Europe! :)

  40. Rachel T says:

Great tips, which I will take with me to Cape Cod next week!, but I cannot agree with taking a snap of a postcard! It is someone else’s work, so in fact its stealing the copyright of the original photographer – I would feel very unhappy about that. Why not take a quick pic of a street sign there, or the hotel map which has the town name on it – pretty much anything will do without using another photographer’s work and livelihood.

  41. Great tips! Thanks for sharing.

  46. Today, I went to the beachfront with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!

  47. Wonderful post however I was wanting to know if you could write a litte more on this subject? I’d be very thankful if you could elaborate a little bit further. Thank you!

  48. Have you ever considered about including a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is fundamental and everything. 182.
