touring our guest room

David and I have always opened our home to others. Our family enjoys having friends, family, and neighbors over. For our overnight guests, we are grateful to have a dedicated guest “suite” (bedroom + bathroom) – and the room is actually used quite often. We wouldn’t have it any other way. Sometimes it’s just one person for a quick overnighter. Sometimes we have a whole family staying with us for a week.

And with that, we always invite our overnight guests to sign the Guest Book – which, of course, includes a few pictures from their stay. We’ve kept up this tradition ever since moving into our first “real house” in 1998. You can see glimpses of our current Guest Book in my July 22, 2013, blog post. Today I thought I’d share this space with you. I cringe a little that this might come across as show & tell. I don’t mean it that way … which is probably why I haven’t even blogged about the guest room for the nearly 8 years we’ve lived in this house.

A few notes

  • The sheets are clean & the room is completely ready on any given day … just in case (in other words, the kids don’t go in there).
  • I always put the sleeping pillows behind the pretty pillows.
  • If I remember, I put a little treat of some kind on the side table as a fun welcome gift.
  • There is always some sort of inspirational type of book on the nightstand.

What’s what

NOTE: Many of these things were purchased many years ago, so it’s not likely that they’re still available. I’m just sharing sources in an effort to answer the questions that may be asked.  : )

  • Bed – Some furniture store that has since closed
  • Quilt – Pottery Barn
  • White pillow shams – Bed, Bath, and Beyond
  • Floral shams & rectangle pillow – Fabric from Fabric Depot in Phoenix, AZ and pillow covers custom made by my seamstress friend Rachel Despain
  • Dresser – Potato Barn in AZ
  • Large picture frames – Michaels (they’re 28″ x 20″) and I had the prints made at Costco
  • Night stands – Potato Barn in AZ
  • Big metal thing on the wall – Can’t remember
  • Frames with patterned paper to the right of the bed – Razmataz (Arizona furniture store, but I’m not sure if they’re still in business); I spray-painted them white and put patterned paper in there (probably from Basic Grey, but it’s been so long I don’t really remember).
  • Clock on the nightstand – Pottery Barn
  • Bowl with fake artichoke things in it – Can’t remember, but I spray-painted it yellow
  • Tall, skinny stand with square wreath – Can’t remember
  • (3) turquoise things on the dresser – Home Goods
  • Yellow lamp – Home Goods
  • Chair & pillow in the corner – Chair from Potato Barn, pillow from Target (recently!)
  • shower curtain – Target
  • trio frame in bathroom – It’s a plate rack from probably from Pier 1 Imports that I spray-painted black. The (3) “frameless frames” are either from Pier 1 Imports or IKEA. Suddenly I’m craving a field trip to IKEA.
  • Yellow towels – most likely Home Goods
  • My jacket (which I seriously could wear every day) – lululemon

I love that you are sharing your home. It is a great sacrifice to let strangers into your home to judge( you know done will). I love peeking and love seeing what works. Just a small tip from you may inspire someone to do something wonderful for someone else. So, I just love all of the sharing. The room is very inviting and your friends will feel very comfy there I am sure. I love the idea of the guest book also.
I just bought a Project Life kit for my son’s girlfriend. And I can’t wait to see her fill it with wonderful memories.

LoL @ ‘big metal thing on the wall’! Love this! And I agree with Cherie, you will most likely inspire someone! I think it’s a great series! And it’s making me consider what I like, or would change about some things around our house. I don’t usually spend a lot oh thought on it. Oddly, my husband is way more into & responsible for us having nice things/things decorated around our house, lol. So I’m thankful for the inspiration! And, your Guest room is lovely! Thanks for sharing!

  4. Ebony says:

Can I come stay with you? LOL! Your guest room is beautiful! Ours is a mess – too small, extra storage for clothes, stuff still needing to be put away from Christmas, stuff that needs to be given away… You inspired me to try to get it in some sort of order!

  9. Lisa Rainford says:

Love the room, looks so pretty, inviting and cozy. I love the book on the nightstand. I like to read before I fall asleep and don’t always remember I book while traveling. I also like that everything is from normal, (and for the most part, inexpensive) places, that anyone can shop at!

  10. Veronique says:

It definately does not come across as show and tell in a bad way!! I’m so excited that you’re back to blogging about every day things. Those of you that have so much talent in the crafting world also have amazing talent in the decorating world. I love to see how I could be doing things…assuming I had any talent! Keep sharing please!

    Becky
What a beautiful room and thank you, thank you for sharing it with us.
It is such a pick-me-up for me to see this. My last month has been very involved with a husband who needed to have surgery to put a trach in as a result of throat cancer (which is gone-and we are very blessed by this). Please continue to share your home-I can hardly wait if it is like this Guest Bedroom!
God Bless You and your Family

what a comfortable space. HUsband and I talk about this whenever we talk about moving into our next home…one thing we will not budge on the needs list is a guest space…love the white washed dresser piece.

  31. I love your guest room, something I’ve been thinking about for awhile now. We just use our daughter’s bedroom (who flew the coop many years ago-but her room is still the same!) which also doubles as a sewing room. Only 1 bathroom for all of us to share, so your guests are lucky to have their own! But I LOVE how you did the room, so peaceful and certainly a place were anyone would love to stay! I love the guest book idea too, however we mostly only get our daughter and one other person, so I don’t know how useful it would be! Thanks for sharing1

  32. I absolutely love your new blog set up!!!!

  38. I love it! We’ve been blessed to have a guest room/bath in our current home of 3 years, and I had big plans to do something cute to it…but haven’t done that yet. The past 6 months we’ve had family living in it, and they are going out on their own soon, and I am have a new plan and idea to decorate it cute to be more welcoming. I love having a revolving door, and I love the guest book idea. Need to start that one. LOVE the black and white pictures, too!
