slowing down

Last week we were able to get away as a family – just the 5 of us – and head to the middle of nowhere for some much needed down time. We went to a dude ranch in southern Utah (and seriously … driving there, you really are in the middle of nowhere).

We played + explored + relaxed + rode horses + did archery + clay pigeon shooting (I nailed it on my first shot and was DONE) + hiked + rested some more + were fed home-cooked meals (I’m a believer in no cooking on vacation) + hung out with the locals + the kids roamed around on the property making up games + befriending every animal in sight.

We just … slowed down.

So lately, with all the activity going on between HSN, and new digital releases, and Project Life inspiration, and contests, giveaways, and sales … I feel like my blog was in desperate need of a post that had nothing to do with products. Today I’m just sharing PICTURES. No details about the specifics of our trip, no personal family memories, not even page examples of these photos slipped into Project Life Photo Pocket Pages.

Nope. Just pictures. All taken with my iPhone 5S. I didn’t bring my dSLR. Shoot, I didn’t even bring an ounce of makeup on this trip. Or any type of hair-styling product. For real. So … you know. I was looking pretty awesome all week. Ask me if I even cared about any of that.

Our Spring Break was all about quality time together. Away. Heavenly, really. And in case you’re wondering, YES – we definitely recommend the Rockin’ R Ranch if going to a dude ranch is of interest to you. We’ll for sure go back. Our kids prefer this over a Disney trip. (Gasp.) True story. And so do we.

  1. So awesome you got to get away and just relax. It’s also awesome that your kids prefer the dude ranch over disneyland. I would too!

Isn’t it funny what the kids will remember about vacations? We’ve done the Disney thing with our kids as well, but they would prefer a vacation along the western shores of Michigan, in the UP of Michigan, or out west. When we were in southern UT 6 years ago this time, we looked into working ranches as a place to stay. The girls were too young at the time, but we would like to stay at a few when we take our next trip out west. Thank you for this recommendation…I have it bookmarked for future reference. :-)

so awesome that you could get away and have wonderful family time! we have a place in the mountains an hour and a half from here and there is no tv…except for movies in the evening…just the outdoors to entertain our kids and grandkids….we don’t need Disneyland, or cruises…it’s not fancy…but it’s ours..lots of fun times and good memories made there already…

Love the photos and the downtime :) The iPhone 5 certainly takes better photos than the 4S

I’m guessing she meant the 4s because I don’t think a 5s is out yet. And I saw a post recently where she said 4s. She does use photo apps though.

  5. Lisa W. says:

This looks heavenly for sure. Nice post…thank you!

  6. Marie says:

Totally love your pictures! Thanks for sharing.

  7. Christine says:

The little guy piggy backing the littler guy is so cute.
    Brotherly love at its best.

Love these photos Becky. I recently took a little weekend away with my husband to do exactly this – slow down, get away from the everyday stuff, and enjoy time with each other. It was an amazing weekend and exactly what I needed. I am so glad for you that you could take the time away with your family and enjoy each other.

  9. Kim says:

I loved looking at your pictures! Especially since we had snow on the ground until yesterday. :-) I’m so glad that someone else is not all crazy about Disney. A Disney trip does nothing for me…. There are so many better things to do on a family vacation.

  10. Kym says:

Looks like a fantastic family trip!! Love the pictures:)

  11. Jennifer A says:

Glad you loved the ranch like we did. WE took a huge family reunion last year. It was awesome. Glad you got to have a trip with your family. Happy day to you

  12. Christine says:

So happy that you had a great family getaway. Nothing like the great outdoors of nature to inspire kid’s creative play. I love Disney but I love these types of getaways as well. Southern Utah is beyond beautiful and I hope to take a Spring break vactation to Moab next year. Your iphone camera pictures are inspiring. I’m upgrading from a iphone 4s to a 5s in a few weeks. I can’t wait to play around with the camera.

  13. Ang says:

My absolute fav is the one of the kids (Claire & Crew?) on the red fence. Perfect.

  14. Angela says:

Thank you for sharing a glimpse into your week and how nice you were able to take a moment to slow down amidst all of the exciting things happening with your brand. Good for you!
I recently got an iPhone5 and after looking at your incredible photos, I’m wondering if you could share some tips. Are these shots right out of your camera or filtered in some way? Do you typically shoot vertically or horizontally with the phone? Love the photo with Claire holding the rock up close – is there a trick to getting the sharp focus in front and her blurred in the background?
Thanks for any words of wisdom for the camera phone rookies, and congratulations on this week’s enormous success!

  15. Robin Gibson says:

Heavenly, for sure! Would love to be there right about now! So glad you got some ‘slow down’ time!

  16. Trisha says:

Looks like a great way to relax with your family on your very much needed break. The HSN airing was incredible and I did order a kit with the auto delivery. Can’t wait. Hope you have a great vacation.

  17. Leslie says:

Good for you guys to be able to get away with just your family! With all that is going on with Project Life it was probably so fun to just shut it all off and have some family time. The photos are gorgeous!

  18. Kasi says:

    Thanks for the virtual break!

I love taking pictures of caked earth. My husband thinks I’m crazy, but it’s beautiful. Isn’t it?
Love the rock. My daughter ALWAYS makes me take pictures of rocks and clumps of dirt.
And LOVE the rusted fence. So ranchy. Great escape. Thank you for sharing with us.

  19. Ruth says:

I love the shot of the kids looking over the fence and the one where one of your boys is carrying the smaller one.

  20. J3SS1C4 says:

So awesome that you guys got to have a family trip away from everything! Those trips are the best… Low key, relaxing, exploring and trying new things! I’m glad you guys all had an amazing time! Your pictures do not look like they came from an iPhone!

  21. Tracy says:

looks like the perfect vacation!! Much needed I’m sure!

  22. Nancy says:

Your pictures are gorgeous. You didn’t NEED your dSLR to capture some awesome pictures. Thanks for sharing.

  23. Steph C says:

Becky! I’ve been to Rockin’ R!! How funny! It was many, many years ago though. I need to do it with the kids…they would love it!

  24. Kimberley says:

Cool…..that’s my everyday life the only thing missing is the cows (and lots of snow right now)! It is neat seeing people experience a little piece of how we live out in the wide open country!!

  25. Chrystal says:

Beautiful photos! I’d love to know how you get such crisp, clear photos from your iPhone!

  26. Katy says:

I will definitely put this on our list for a family vacation when our little girl gets a little bit older. (She is 1 now.) LOVE THIS!!!!

  27. Debbie Clark says:

Much, much, much better than Disney! Lovely photos!

  28. TracyBzz says:

My kids (and DH and I) love doing things on vacations like Disneyland because we live this kind of life style the other 51 weeks of the year. We don’t live on a farm, but my parents do and we go almost every weekend. We’re not in a city so there isn’t this rush rush, jammed up with so many people all the time. We also will go to the small mountain town on the occasional long weekend and enjoy that versus prairie farm life. But whatever makes you happy is the best vacation for you.

  29. Lisa Geldmacher says:

Wow, these pictures make me want to run right outside with my camera in hand. You make my ordinary world look so beautiful. Thanks for posting! Glad you were able to get away–you all deserve it, you’ve been busy for all of us! Thanks!

    Oh Becky….
I live on a cattle ranch, and those saddles make me sore just looking at them. Once you sit in a real saddle, you will not want to ever go back to a cheapo saddle ever again, maybe it’s because we ride for 8+ hrs when we do saddle up and ride.

  31. Oh my… Pure bliss.
And I LOVE how dirty your kids got!

  32. Katie Roose says:

Your boys riding piggie back is the cutest. picture. ever. Such a keeper!!!!
