ready for a haircut

Some of you have known me long enough to know that I’ve seen my share of hairstyles. This sampling right here is just from the recent 5 years, actually. I was a lot more … “creative” if we go back even further, but we won’t go there.

As of right now at this very moment, my hair is longer than it has ever been since high school more than 20 years ago! And you know what? I’m ready for a haircut. True to my innate desire to change my hair style from time to time, I’m just ready for a change. Don’t get me wrong — I’ve actually really loved having long hair. But the thing is, it’s becoming more high-maintenance than I prefer. My hair isn’t thick and I don’t have a lot of natural “body” as it is, so longer = flatter.

So I’m wondering … do any of you have suggestions for medium-length haircuts that you might recommend? I’m not interested in going really short (been there, done that), but I’m definitely interested in taking away several inches. I would love nothing more than to donate my hair, but my understanding is that because it’s been color-treated, my hair isn’t usable for that reason. My daughter Claire has been able to donate her hair which was a really special experience for her.

Anyway — if you have seen something on Pinterest or a blog or anywhere that you can share the link with me, please leave a comment with that link so I can check out your ideas. And if you’re following my social media, I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before you see the results of whatever I end up doing. May be drastic. May not be. We’ll see!

The lob hair cute is all the rage and very versatile!

  2. Meagan says:

hair cut*… autoplus can suck it!

I currently have a shoulder length “lob” (Thanks Meagan for giving me a name for it!), which I changed to after having hair about your length about 6 months ago. It was certainly a change, but I really love it! It looks cute both straight AND curly, and is pretty darn easy to take care of!

The only thing I miss is a long ponytail, but if you went longer than shoulder length, you wouldn’t have that problem! haha :)

Good luck! You’ll be beautiful no matter what. :)

I have no doubt you will be beautiful any way you get your haircut. You are surrounded by beauties as I have been showing my stylist Kari Holt’s photo as I love the length, style and highlights!

  5. HannahL says:

Cut about 6 inches off and go back to a more natural look/color.

I vote for the lob…a longer bob. I was in the same boat as you. I had wanted my hair to grow out. Well, it did and I too found it very time consuming to manage. I talked to my stylist and got a lob and kept the ombre look. I love it!

  7. I LOVE LOVE LOVE your hair!!!!
it has some pretty wave to it!
looks great long! can’t wait to see what you do!

How funny I was recently thinking I haven’t seen your hair this long ever and surprised you haven’t cut it yet than this comes.

I like the length in picts 3. 4 & 7 on you not too short so you can pull it back easy and not too long that it is in the way annoying.

My personal rule is it must be able to be in a ponytail for the days it is in my way or annoying me or if I go swimming.

Being an active mom you probably pull your hair up/back often so that is something to consider when chopping. Love that you may donate it.

Cant wait to see the results

Your hair looks great in all of them, but I LOVE the top right (with the sunglasses on your head. ) That’s a fairly low maintenance style and looks great straight or with curl. Shoulder length is a great length, because you can still rock the pony tail when exercising.

  10. Nicole says:

Ohh, and I love the color of the bottom middle pic for you. Love!

And I tagged you in the comment. I think this shoulder length cut with a few layers would still allow you to put it up and give you straight and curly styling options. And with your current ombre, I like the darker natural color on top. So go a little darker but with the auburn tones you naturally have. Get a nice rich color!
I just cut off 5 inches of hair for the first time in 10 years and I love it! So much less work.

I had a ton of hair cut off in December and I wasn’t sure I’d like it. My hair is thick and it really is my best feature. However, it was starting to feel like it was weighing me down….so after almost a year of contemplation I did it. The lob. It’s to my shoulders….I can still put it in a super cute pony tail and it’s adorable! I also get mine color treated (the gray is now white I’m convinced) and they throw color treated hair away so I dumped that idea and went with the mid length. Since my hair is colored every 4 weeks I am careful to only wash every 3 days. Usually it goes like this….straight and blown out the first day, curly the second and a cute little pony the third. I love my new length and it takes me FAR less time to get myself ready in the morning which is a huge plus!! Isn’t getting a new “do” so fun?!

just went to Pinterest and searched for the lob haircut. WOW! so many awesome examples. Many really “looked like you”. Have fun!

  14. Kim C says:

I know you said you didn’t want to go real short but I loved your short hair from 10-12 years ago. Shoulder length would be good too.

  15. Andi R says:

Becky, I just wanted to let you know that you can still donate your hair if you want to regardless of it is colored or not, just as long as it hasn’t been bleached. Here is the link to Lock of Love that gives the requirements for donating hair. I was always a fan of your shoulder length hair.

Can’t wait to see what you do. Love your products as well, been using them since they first came out. Keep up the good work. :-)

  16. RaeLyn says:

i’m pretty sure “locks of love” will take color treated hair…You have to give them 10 inches though, that’s a lot.

  17. Irene says:

There is another organization (not Locks of Love) that will take your hair! Talk to your hair dresser about it.

  18. J Allen says:

Locks of Love requires nine inches of hair. They accept donations of any hair type, but for the hair pieces they use only hair that is healthy and not color treated. The hair they receive that is too damaged for hair pieces they sell for other uses.

Good luck on the new style quest ;)

  19. Monica says:

I like the 2nd from the top haircut. So cute, makes you look younger too.

  20. Jo-Anne says:

Hi Becky, I’m in the same boat. I have curly hair and the longer it gets the more curl it pulls out. When wet it’s halfway down my back. Dry it’s a bit past my shoulders. My hair is also thick and fine. I’m not sure of a style and I have not found a stylist that I am comfortable with and cuts hair well. Well, I did find one, but I think $75.00 for a hair cut is a little pricey. I can’t wait to see what you do.

  21. pdnwv says:

https://www.pinterest.com/pamnwv/hair/ My hair is also fine and less full than I would like, I have had several variations of a stacked/angled bob, you can get this cut with a lot of different lengths! Happy styling!

  22. Melissa says:

No suggestions, but I want to say that your short, spiky hair was ADORBS!!! ‘Can’t believe it didn’t “make the cut” (LOL) of pix above. Best of luck w/ whatever you decide!! :)

  23. Jo Eades says:

My hair wasn’t quite as long as yours but last week I had it cut to my bottom layer (about 2 – 3 inches off in total) with a really blunt cut, very similar to Guliania Rancic’s hair. So now I’m all one length, no layers but long enough to put up in a pony tail.

Here is what some friends and I are doing with our hair…takes treated hair…

  25. Beth says:

You are so beautiful, you look great in all of your old styles! I personally like you with that soft subtle highlights and the longer bob length. Please take a photo so we can see the new ‘do!

  26. awengskie says:

Love your hair regardless what length, my fave is from the 1st row 3rd pic, love the highlights and the length is just right. Thank you for sharing this blog.
