rak giveaway

RAK

In our family – like many of yours – we have been very focused on serving others this holiday season. As parents we’ve been pondering quite a bit about how to serve, who to serve, and when to serve. A flood of ideas have come to us and it feels like just about every day this month we’ve been working on – or doing – something for someone.

My heart is full, and I’m reminded once again of how serving others is one of the greatest ways to feel joy.

Speaking of giving, we have a giveaway today – but this one has a little twist that is inspiring and heartfelt. When our Holiday Card Design winners were announced and we were contacting them to send their prize money, Kari received a surprising response from one of our winners - Jana Day.

Jana

I believe wholeheartedly in Becky’s mantra to cultivate a good life. While $100 would feel wonderful lining my pocket, especially as the holiday season approaches, I do not “need” that money. To have been chosen a winner is gift enough for me. Therefore, I would really love to “pay it forward” in a manner that you and Becky deem fit by passing along my monetary prize to a person/organization more in need than me! I’m hoping this is possible?!?!

Of course we wanted to make her wish possible. As we discussed a few different options for what we might do with that $100, Jana mentioned she would love to use it to pay for someone to have the opportunity to take my upcoming Project Real Life class. Perfect! And SO generous! So here we are with an opportunity for you to win a seat in my class that begins January 9, 2014. All because of Jana and her good heart.

Leave your first name + city + state/country for a chance to win. That’s it. We will randomly select and announce the lucky winner of Jana’s gift on Wednesday, December 18th. Name will be added to the bottom of this post.

More importantly, I hope you feel inspired by Jana’s act of paying it forward. If you feel inclined to share a quick note about one way that you or your family is serving someone else – or perhaps a way that you have been blessed by someone else’s service … I for one would love continued inspiration on doing good.

Thanks for the chance to win! For the past month, I’ve been trying to find a small act of service to perform each day, and I write it down each evening before I go to bed. It helps me remember the reason for the season. :)

I wish more people would be willing to serve others. Even if it’s just someone else in your own family. Taking the time to do something for your spouse that you normally put off, or helping your sister with something. Serving starts at home.

    Thank you, Jana!

During this season, our family sets aside a specific amount for gift-giving, for ourselves, and for our favorite charities. This year, we have given to the Catholic Charities, Solano Mission Center (to feed and shelter the homeless), Disabled Veterans, and we’ve given to help with the relief efforts from those affected by the typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. We are also constantly donating gently used clothes and toys to different charitable institutions. We are teaching our 3 children that we have to help those in need to show our appreciation for the life we have.

My family, pays it forward often without making plans out of it EX. Paying for the car behind you’re cars parking, paying for the next families meal while in a drive thru, keeping “Homeless packs” in our car that consist of a few bottles of water, some fruit and a blanket for when you see someone in need of it on the street. Giving doesn’t have to be LARGE it can be small and just as meaningful :-)

Teaching our kids that it is good to give to those who don’t have as much. We have a couple other things in the works also. Not for our glory, but for our Lord and Savior alone! He has blessed us abundantly this year and we love to give back!

Thanks so much for the chance! I give back by chairing a Toys For Tots toy drive and distribution at our local builders association. We call it Building a Better Christmas. It’s our way of reaching out and giving back to the community that we serve. Its a blessing to see the generosity of others at work and to touch people who truly need a little boost to get through the holidays. Many of the people we help are the ones who fall through the cracks of the bigger organizations. They make enough to feed their families and provide housing, but not enough for any extras like Christmas gifts. It’s a lot of work, but its worth it.

Thank you for this opportunity to win the amazing gift of a spot in your up coming project life class. One way we as a family of seven are serving others is that we are all working together to keep my parents in their own home as per their wishes. They are both 85 and my father has dementia so some days are tough. They have been married for 63 years this December and we want them to continue to sleep in the same bed together cozy and content with their wood stove burning. Some days are challenging with all that goes on in each one of our lives but we believe that it is what is right so we forego other things to make this possible for them. I am a hard core Project Life believer and feel I could learn so much from a class by Becky. My documentation of course involves my parents so one day we can look back and be thankful that we as a family served them and made there last days as happy as possible. Thanks again Jana. Blessings to you and yours this holiday season.

I have heard and seen lots of people paying for the car behind them in the Starbucks drive-thru line. This happened to a co-worker and she was going to pay it foward the next day. It gave her a boost two days in a row.

Last Christmas my husband was laid off and someone at church gave us a gift card for groceries. I didn’t even know that anyone knew of our situation – and it really touched me. My kids were able to pick out special treats (like oreos and ice cream) for our holiday without me worrying about every penny spent. This year I’m excited to be able to do this for another family in need!

My husband has been very sick for the last few months, he has been unable to work and was put on short-term disability, I had to quit my job to be home and help care for him, money has been tight to say the least. One day we got a card in the mail with no return address and it was not signed. It included a very generous gift card for our grocery store. We were shocked and so grateful. A few days later I was buying groceries with our gift. I noticed the man at the next register was having trouble with his food stamp card, it just wouldn’t go through for some reason. The manager came over and took him up the service desk to call about his card. He only had a few things he was trying to buy, bread, milk, some baby food. After my stuff was paid for, I handed my gift card to the girl at the next register and asked her to let me pay for the man’s groceries. We had been blessed in such a huge way, helping this man in a small way was the least I could do to pay it forward.

Every time we find ourselves at the store buying gifts for family/friends we always make sure to pick up at least one gift for someone in need. We have been donating toys to the Children’s Aid Society this year, as well as food to our local food bank.
We got a big snow storm a couple weeks ago while we were away and my neighbour cleared our driveway for us before we got back. We made a fresh batch of homemade cookies to thank him.

On Christmas Day for the past few years we have gone to the homeless shelter to serve dinner. Our children look forward to this every year. It has become our favorite part of the Christmas season. It’s an opportunity for us to give to those in need. And a great reminder to our family of what is truly important. I know that it has helped us to feel gratitude for what we have and also fills our hearts to overflowing when we serve those who have so little. I am always humbled by the enormous gratitude that is expressed to us for such a small and simple act.

Our neighbors husband passed away two years ago. She sent me a text asking if she could pay my husband and I to go over and put up Christmas lights on her house. That she and her 3 sons didn’t feel like it was Christmas without lights. Well, my husband and I went and bought lights and snuck over to her house to put them up. My 9 year old son came with us to help. When my neighbor came out and saw what we were doing, she started crying. The best part was my son got to experience what it was like to give selflessly and see tears of complete and udder JOY!!!! He loved the experience and wants to do more things to help people and see tears of JOY. :)

As awesome as it was for Kari to pay it forward, I dont want to seem negative here but isn’t the money that she would have received going back to Becky anyway. Isn’t that where the money goes when people pay for this course. Yes someone gets to win a free course but that’s not really giving to someone in need. Someone going hungry or with a fatal disease or something like that seems they would need it more. Even a cancer patient in hospital could receive a PL care package. I just don’t see how Kari’s generosity is being used to its fullest here. Sorry. :(

What a beautiful act of kidness. Particularly at this time of year when everyone would like a little extra money in their own hands. Being kind is sort of my life mantra, I believe being kind can change someone’s day, improve someone’s week or even change someone’s life. I however don’t believe there should be ‘random’ acts of kindness because I do not believe that kindness should be a random thing, but sadly it is rarer than it should be.

daegu, Korea. We are fortunate in that we do not need for material things, we have an abundance. We have a great home and community. Our only need is family connection home is so far away. We miss them and have to work to keep family ties strong, This Christmas we selected 2 children from the church angel tree, we were late and the only names left were older children who we I think may be special needs from the local orphanage, at first it was a disappointment and then I realized that this wasn’t about about building good feelings about the “nice” thing we were doing, it should be about bringing joy to a child or youth. we went back and got more cards and bought clothes, a treat to eat and a toy that could be played with by a developmentally delayed child for each child and youth.

A few years ago, money was incredibly tight and our water heater went out. The man who came out to service us we needed a new one. I said thanks for the info, but we don’t have the money right now. He got on the phone for a minute, then told me that he had one that had been returned (because the person didn’t like it) and he could provide it to us at no charge. He came out on his personal time to install the new water heater. It was such a blessing! My husband and I have always been grateful for this gentleman and we have taken any chance we have to bless someone else in need.

We do different things such as paying for the person behind us in the fast food/drink line and providing “Christmas” to an 8 year old girl through the Cheyenne River Project and our church. We volunteer at church and help, in a small way, to support our church’s Nakabango, Uganda mission project.

I’ve loved reading most of the responses, but saddened that some acts are being questioned as “not quite good enough”. I think we can decide what acts of kindness we would like to participate in and everyone deserves to have some random kindness come their way, even Starbucks employees. I hope all comments from here on down are positive and uplifting. Thank you, Jana, for your generosity.

    • Rachel

I agree with you. I did not mean that they don’t deserve kindness. Just that they have food at their disposal and in the spirit of giving there are more needy people. Even the most wealthy of people need kindness, it can soften even the hardest of hearts. Was not meaning they didn’t deserve. Sorry if taken the wrong way.

We like to choose families in need to share a “surprise Christmas” with, which we leave on their doorstep (knock and run). It’s our favorite part of Christmas. We’re also starting to only give our kids five presents for Christmas – something they want, something to wear, something they need, something to read and something to give (money they give to the charity of their choice). I saw this idea online this year and really loved it, especially the “something to give” one.

These are the sort of comments we need to see on here. Those who received not about those who give. We give out of want and ability to help others who are down, not for a pat on the back. Good on you. Keep going. There are lots of wonderful people out there willing to help and stay anonymous.

My husband has been in a nursing home for three years. I photograph all the events there and scrapbook them for all the other residents, their families, and the staff to enjoy. They post my work on a bulletin board in the activities/dining room. My husband has lost nearly all his long term memory. Scrapbooking has helped him to remember and/or recall important events in our 53-year marriage. Posting the pages on Facebook allows friends and family who do not live closeby to still be involved in our daily lives.

As a family we do different things to bless others and we also receive blessings – but a personal story to me: I have been doing some photography (although I’m backing away from it after my last couple of sessions are done being edited) and there is a family that lives on my street that has a unique backyard with a creek in it. It is a wonderful place with great light. I kindly asked them if I could “borrow” their yard here and there for photo sessions. They have allowed me to do this for a couple of years. I wanted to repay them by taking their family photos this year (a free session with a free disk of edited images). So we had the session this fall and it was so fun! Also found out that they are fellow Christians. Cool! Just the other day I receive a Christmas card from them (which used photos from our session), and a super kind note with very kind words – AND a generous gift card to a department store, Kohl’s, thanking me for their photographs. So this was totally unexpected because I was trying to thank THEM. Warms my heart!

Well, I’m working on simplifying – including backing away from digital scrapbook designing and client photography and just sticking with freelance graphic design. This class seems very interesting and inspiring :)

I have a HUGE stash of scrapbooking supplies (like many of us). After seeing the effects of budget cut on state funded mental health facilities, I realized I could help. I got guidelines from the staff on what was, wasn’t allowed and donated 3 boxes of crafty items. In addition I go there once a week to lead creative sessions, and we make things. The patients love it. Some people are so medicated they can hardy hold the paper, but the staff has told me they all love the things they create. Maybe a journal, a card etc. It is little effort on my part and makes a huge difference to someone else. It is not entirely a selfless gesture. When I leave there, sometimes I actually cry at how lucky I am and that even with all of life’s problems, I am truly blessed. They help me as much as I help them. I hope all you crafters reading this will check out things for yourself. Especially the smaller counties …. maybe you can make a difference too, and help yourself at same time. I promise you will not regret it.

On a political note: We don’t need to restrict gun ownership – we need to help the mentally ill.

We always love to participate in any giving trees at the holidays (through Salvation Army or others). My mom started that when I was younger and I still love to do that with my kids.
Also, for the last few Christmases, I’ve done fundraising with a wonderful international Down syndrome adoption ministry called Reece’s Rainbow. (www.reecesrainbow.org ) We have a 7 year old with DS and I’ve always wanted to find a way to help those children around the world whose societies largely shut them away and most are abandoned by parents at birth. We fundraise for a particular child to help with the adoption costs when a family comes forward to adopt that child (cause adoption is not cheap of course!). When we do this, it really helps me focus on what me and my children really need – we can forgo a few extra gifts if it means helping a child with special needs find a family and have the life they deserve and that we so easily take for granted.

My husband’s request for Christmas for the past several years has been that anyone wanting to give him gifts would instead purchase toys for Toys for Tots. There is a local charity, Angels Among Us (for families of children being treated for cancer), where I’ve directed people who wish to gift me. I’ve literally cried tears of joy for the generosity of those people who have donated! We’ve also supported our county Food Pantry and taken names from the Adopt-a-Family tree at church. This year, my 10 year old chose her own tag from the tree. Love her precious, giving heart!

Thanks to Jana for blessing someone through sharing this rak giveaway. I would enjoy taking the class, particularly as my husband and I are working on our family’s history. We’re building on research that my dad and his mom have done; both of them have passed on now so we’re picking up where they left off. As a family we support a local Christmas family through our church, making sure that the family has a good Christmas, food and clothing to help meet their needs and a few gifts to make the day special. We also support Toys for Tots and local charities that work with children & youth in our community. Christmas is about children and families for us.

This year, my 12 year old daughter and 10 of her friends raised money to purchase gifts for children whose parents cannot afford to buy any presents. We had a bake sale – through the generosity of friends, family and people in our community, we raised almost $700 in just 3 hours! It was so heartwarming to see so many people give to such an amazing cause. The girls had the best time purchasing gifts for the children – they were amazed that most of the children were asking for clothes and shoes! I think it really opened the eyes of my daughter and her friends to see just how truly blessed they are!! It also made them realize how much joy we can get by giving to others! I already purchased your class, so, if I win, please pay it forward and pick another person. Merry Christmas!

Thank you for the chance to win! Jana truly is an amazing and generous woman to be so giving like this! It’s inspiring to see :-)

I’d love to win this to give to my mum. She’s always saying she wants to get into Project Life, and this would give us some crafty time together doing something fun and meaningful! I took the class last year and it was great, and I’m sure she’d love it as well!

My young daughters and I have the “One Good Deed a Day” journal and we have been selecting things from here to do randomly. It is further connecting us to our neighbors and our community and we are having fun doing it!

Spanish Fork, UT We always provide Christmas for a homeless person with mental health issues. It is all anonymous so we don’t know them and they don’t know us but it feels so good to give to someone who could use some joy in their life.

I would truly enjoy this chance to win. My life has changed so much in the past year. I have been seperated from my husband for over a year now and yes I am much happier but I am not able to afford the fun things in life anymore as I am supporting myself but my passion for scarpbooking and documenting my life hasn’t changed. I still love to take photos and am hoping to use project life as a tool to get my self caught up on my scrapbooking. My son and his activities will still contiune and I would love to take this class.
