Hello 2017! Resolutions on the brain? Me too. And today I’m not really going to share my “advice” on the matter. You’ve probably already read and seen a lot about goal-setting and resolutions for the new year. Perhaps you’ve already made a list … a game plan … whatever it is that works for you.

Last year I shared my thoughts in this blog post on how “beginning with the end in mind” can be an extraordinarily effective way to help with goal-setting. Check it out if you missed it. This year I keep thinking about affirmations. I’m not sure why, but it’s what keeps coming back to me every time I think about how I’d like to move onward + upward in 2017.

When I think about that word — affirmations — I kinda cringe a little. Or chuckle. Or both. Because, come on. Stuart Smalley ruined it for me! You know what I’m talking about, right? Remember the sketch on Saturday Night Live — Daily Affirmations?

*sigh*

I know, I know. Affirmations have a corny association for many of us. But here’s the thing: They can be powerful, right? Have you ever tried verbalizing or writing down things about yourself that empower you just a little more to actually BE that person that you’re trying to be? So in light of cultivating a good life (our company mission + my personal mission too, for that matter) … I’m going to get personal and share my own affirmations. Call me corny — that’s fine — but as I say / write these things about myself, it’s like I can FEEL more of the reality and / or potential in these statements.

This is personal, guys. This is really for ME and not really anyone else. But I’m sharing it here in case it sparks any teeny tiny shred of inspiration for someone else. And actually … thinking ahead, this is for my children and other future posterity too … so that there is a record of my values. I have printed this list as a reminder for myself and a keepsake for the future.

Aaaaand here we go. My 2017 affirmations. By no means is this list complete; I’m not covering every detail. But it’s a pretty good representation of my heart. I’m already doing okay with some of these and some of them … well, I have a lot of room for improvement. Always. But ALL of these things illustrate who I want to be … because in 2017 I want to be more focused on the person that I AM, more than the things that I DO.


relationships

My relationship with my husband is more important than any of my other human relationships. We prioritize weekly date night.

I honor my role as a mother and my children know and feel this whole-heartedly. They never have to wonder if they’re more important than work / friends / hobbies / etc.

I tuck each child in bed individually every single night and use that time to truly connect on a daily basis.

I value family time as the BEST time and am intentional with the time that we do have together, especially when it’s the 5 of us together. We play, work, serve, worship, learn, and teach together. And sitting together for dinner time is a priority.

I recognize that traditions are grounding and special and significant in our lives and I do my part to carry out and create traditions in our family.

Car time = valuable time together and I use that time to connect. I put work + worries out of my mind and take advantage of the opportunity that we can really focus on connecting.

I support my husband and children in the hobbies and interests they pursue because I know what my own hobbies and interests mean to me.

I nurture extended relationships, even in small doses. I am a daughter / sister / aunt who remembers birthdays, reaches out at random times, and lets my extended family members know that I love them + I’m thinking about them. As a family, we make efforts for time together with extended family whenever possible.

I am a loyal friend who avoids gossip. I take a sincere interest in others and find value in learning from different people — regardless of how well or how little I know them.

I encourage healthy friendships for my kids and make every effort to allow time together with peers who are a positive influence on my kids.

I surround myself with good people. I don’t expect them to think / act / believe the same as me, and I respect our differences, but I choose to be with those who uplift me by their example and friendship.

I freely express admiration and gratitude and love to others. I don’t hold back from sharing compliments.


work

I am a passionate entrepreneur who cares deeply about helping others in their own quests to cultivate a good life and record it.

I work hard + smart.

I keep 99% of my work contained in the hours that my children are at school so when I’m in Mom Mode, I’m really all theirs.

I have curated a team and an environment that is HAPPY + productive. I hire people who are loyal, honest, hard-working, communicate well, and are good team players.

I am open-minded, a good listener, one who praises, one who shares correction / counsel / critique with kindness and full respect … all because of my desire to help each employee with their personal and professional development.

Even when I am consumed with the busy-ness of day-to-day tasks, I do not lose sight of the bigger picture.

I am respectful of other companies / brands / competitors and fully appreciate that there is room for everyone, and everyone has their place. We have a no-drama policy in our office because that is counterproductive.

I use social media for GOOD. My little corner of cyberspace is a SAFE place where anyone of any age can come for inspiration on cultivating a good life and recording it. I share content that is uplifting, drama-free, and inspiring.

I do what I do for the customer. At the end of the day, what I devote to my work is for her / him.

My work is part of our family legacy. The much bigger picture reminds me that even though this company is built on a passion for helping people preserve their memories, my prayer is that my children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, etc. will be infinitely blessed with the legacy David and I created together.


spirituality

I pray each morning and each evening because connecting with God is how I can have the greatest clarity on how I should live my life.

I turn to the scriptures each day as the main source of understanding how to be more Christlike.

I attend church every single Sunday because there I renew my covenants and worship my Father in Heaven and Savior Jesus Christ. I am also richly blessed by listening to the talks given and lessons shared. I love participating in discussions that center around the Gospel with others at church.

Each month I participate in other things that ground me even more in my personal spirituality such as paying tithing, going to the temple to further my understanding of God’s plan for me, and fasting.

I forgive easily. And when it doesn’t come as easily, I pray for strength to forgive because I know I can’t do it alone.

I have faith in God’s plan — and God’s timing. When I feel prompted to do something or stop doing something or whatever the prompting may be, I pay attention to those feelings and act accordingly. I understand that when I align my actions with His will, He will trust me more.

I seek after opportunities to serve — in small ways and in big ways.


health

I am my own advocate. I watch for anything that doesn’t seem quite right and I address them without delay. I listen to my body. I get things checked out. I stay on top of my regular medical / dental / vision appointments.

I prioritize exercise and it is a very integral part of my life — at least 3 days a week.

I can enjoy all the yummy foods but have total self control of my portions. Except when Wendy makes her fudge. Then I eat all the fudge.

I don’t drink my calories. Water for the win — always.

I appreciate that Culver’s is right next door to our office and ridiculously convenient, but I know better than to make that a regular lunch. Twice a month is plenty.

I plan ahead for myself (lunches + snacks at the office) and my family so that I’m being very intentional about what we’re consuming.

I prepare a homemade meal at least 3-4 evenings a week.


money

I spend less than I make. Period.

I am a responsible and grateful steward of our financial resources.

I am a saver more than I am a spender.

I am generous and use some of our resources to bless others.


home

Our home is a place of refuge, peace, joy, comfort, and happy memories — for the five of us and also for our guests.

Our home is open. We love having visitors — friends over to play with the kids, dinner guests, overnight guests, and we’ve even had a few people live with us on a short-term basis and at various times, as needed. In our home, people feel loved and welcomed.

When it comes to material things, we only have things that we USE or that we LOVE. Clutter is a thing of the past. In our home we have pictures and decor that remind us of what’s important.

In our home, everyone contributes and shares the workload in keeping things orderly and clean. This together effort bonds us a family and teaches our children the importance of being a good steward of “things.”

To me, organization matters. Being organized in every area contributes to the positive and peaceful tone and feeling in our home.

Home decorating, for me, is not at all for impressing anyone, ever. I decorate because it is an expression of my creativity and I love making our home beautiful.

This year we are building a custom home — a long-time dream for me and David. We will hit snags and bumps in the road. There will be frustrations, but I will not lose sight of the bigger picture that these are first-world problems and I am able to maintain a perspective of gratitude and patience through the process.


balance

I make time for hobbies, interests, and FUN.

I work hard and my work is helping others with memory keeping, but my own personal memory keeping is not sacrificed and I still make time for this in my life. (Check out this recent blog post that outlines what my personal memory keeping entails.)

I value breaks — Evenings. Weekends. Especially the Sabbath Day. Holidays. Taking actual, real breaks from work and the usual day-to-day “grind” is important for my well-being and happiness.

    Thank you for sharing. I went through an awful 7 years of divorce litigation and 10 years out, things are still not “right” …I have done my best as I had to finance that, go back to,work, and raise 3 boys alone. No other family at all. Point being I have none of the “energy” your affirmations bring forth. I truly try every day and have done my best and devoted my all to my kids who have been through dreadful events, but I am tired and lonely. I wish I had some of your zest and joy, and had you as a friend! I am, of course, grateful for my blessings, which took great courage on my part to achieve. I just need some oomph and more joy. I am working on it. Thank you for sharing all you do. Your IG feed is my daily therapy! My best to you for 2017.

    Great post! I loved reading through your affirmations and I agree and aspire to them all. What happens if your spouse is not supportive in certain areas? I’ve been married for 37 good years to a man I love and respect. He is, however, MUCH less concerned about clutter and his borderline hoarder habit than I am. In the past it’s been a source of conflict, but has gradually evolved into a sort of “live and let live ” mentality. He has his multiple stacks and I try to have order around them. Maybe that’s the best we can do, but it doesn’t change me resenting them. Every year he asks me what I want for Christmas, or my birthday, or our anniversary, and the answer is always the same. “I want your stacks gone. ” That works for the week of the event, but that’s about it.

    I am inspired by what you have put together. As with anything it always helps to have it in writing. Of all the things that you wrote the one that touched me to my core was that you tuck each one of your children into bed individually each night. My son is 12 and I walk upstairs with him every night and tuck him in, always wondered if he was to old for this? Your list affirms why this is good and touches my heart.

  22. What vulnerability to share such special and personal affirmations. I read each and every word and just have to let you know how much I just LOVE LOVE LOVE what you have written. As part of my work, I teach clients all the time about how to write affirmations that actually work and are helpful and motivating. Your affirmations are just perfect. I always suggest that they need to be specific and in the present tense. And each and every one of yours are just that. They are so beautifully written. And what a gift to so many that you shared them here. I know that you have a business and a mission with all of your work, but I hope you know just how truly special and meaningful you are to so many people in ways so far beyond memory keeping. Every time I see the written words “cultivating a good life and recording it” ~ I can actually FEEL more and more of what you mean.     This is why I love you! You are honest. You are inspiring. And as I read these I know, just from following you for years, that these are you ideal and what you will strive for, but you aren’t going to get all worked up about not being perfect.
