Instructions

  1. Download the file you want or click on "Get 'em all" to get the whole collection.
  2. Open the .png file in your image editing application (ex - Adobe Elements or Photoshop). Note: Whatever program you use, it needs to support multi-layer editing.
  3. Open up your photo in the same application.
  4. With both files open, either copy & paste the photo into the card template or drag and drop. You now have 2 layers.
  5. Once the photo is on the template card, resize the photo to fit as needed. You can do this by grabbing any corner of the photo and bringing it in until it's just the size you need.
  6. With your Move tool selected, move the photo around until it's where you want it to be.
  7. You now want to put your photo layer underneath the card template layer. (Usually the layers can be found at right.) To do this, grab the photo layer and drag it underneath your card layer. Or grab the card layer and drag it on top of your photo layer. Either way will rearrange your layers.
  8. To do any additional resizing or moving of your photo, be sure to click on your photo layer, click on your move tool, and adjust as needed.
  9. Save your final file as a .jpg file and upload to your favorite photo printer.
  10. Pat yourself on the back for being on-the-ball with your holiday cards this year and staying in touch with loved ones.

Tip

The 6" x 7.5" is Costco's greeting card size. The cool thing is that they let you upload your own JPG for that size... and... they'll provide the envelopes as well.

Disclaimer: I strongly recommend you verify this with your local Costco before placing an order.

Tip

As with any cards, be sure to start with your envelope size. If you choose a card size and print all the cards without knowing for sure that you can get an envelope that will be a perfect fit, you may be shooting yourself in the foot. Get your envelopes first.

Tip

Most digital printing services offer the option to include a thin border on your print. A clean, white border would compliment any of these designs really well.

Tip

Feel like a decorated photo card just isn't enough? Here are some suggestions for what else you could include as you re-connect with friends & family this holiday season.

  • Newsletter: Keep it short & sweet so that they'll want to read it. A single-spaced, double-sided, 3-page newsletter may easily get overlooked.

  • Bullet points: Just list some of your family's highlights and happenings from the past year. This is often a preferred format for reading.

  • Recipe: Include a family holiday favorite.

  • Interview: Ask each family member a few questions that reflect on the past year (favorite hobby, best moment, biggest achievement, etc.) and share the Q&A results.

  • Favorite quote or scripture that is particularly meaningful to your family at this time, or that emphasizes the reason for the season.

Personal Yearbook

creating your personal yearbook personal yearbook

Description

This is an ongoing project designed for students to complete themselves – no matter if they're in public, private, or home school. This will work with children as young as preschool and can even be used for older kids. The end result is a very basic month-by-month look at their journey and growth in a single school year.

Why?

I believe in teaching children that recording their personal history is important and fun and valuable. Highlighting their own handwriting and art and pictures in a format like this can really boost a child's self-esteem. This isn't the type of project that ends up in the garbage. Volunteering to help kids complete this is a great way to get in the classroom with your child and serve your community.

download
Becky Higgins Personal Yearbook Download Becky Higgins Personal Yearbook Download

Getting started

  1. Introduce yourself to your child's teacher if they don't already know you. Volunteer to do this Personal Yearbook project with each of the kids in the class on a monthly basis.
  2. Determine ahead of time if you are going to provide all the materials or if you're going to ask for a small donation from the parents to contribute to the project. It could be $2-3 per student, depending on how fancy-schmancy you want to get. I recommend keeping it simple and un-cluttered.
  3. Together with the teacher, create a plan of each month's topic/theme/activity so that the "big picture" feels good to both of you. For example, you could focus on a big-deal activity each month (first day of school, holiday performance, Valentines exchange party). Or you could focus on routine activities that paint a picture of everyday life for the students (library, cafeteria, recess).
  4. Gather all supplies based on how many students are in the class.

What you need

  • Time to pop into your child's class twice a month.
  • Camera
  • 3-prong folder for each child
  • White cardstock for printing the pages (title page + 2 pages per month of school)
  • clear page protectors to hold 8.5" x 11" cardstock pages
  • Adhesive (most kids will already have glue sticks at school)
  • Pen or pencil (if the kids don't already have this at school there's a problem)
  • Crayons, markers, colored pencils for drawing art (again, they should have this)
  • Variety of patterned paper (optional)

On a monthly basis

1. PHOTOGRAPH. Go into the classroom sometime early-ish in the month to do the photographing. Snap a picture of each child doing the same general activity that will fit with that month's layout theme/topic. Be sure the pictures of each child are all the same orientation (either they're all horizontal or they're all vertical). This generally takes me about 15-20 minutes.

2. PRINT PHOTOS. Give yourself enough time to print the pictures -- one per child -- with your favorite local printer or online service. The prints will all be standard 4" x 6" prints.

3. PRINT PAGES & GATHER SUPPLIES. Using the download provided here, print however many pages (both left and right sides) you need. Gather what you need to bring supplies into the classroom.

4. GO BACK TO THE CLASSROOM. Go into the classroom again later in the month to do that month's layout. Bring the following for each child: 2 printed sheets (left page & right page), their individual photo, and already-cut strips of patterned paper*.

5. GUIDE THEM. Guide the children, step-by-step, in creating their layout. They have 4 steps:

  1. Adhere the photo.
  2. Decorate the top border of the pages (with either coloring or paper).
  3. Draw a picture of something to go along with that month's theme.
  4. Handwriting. Each child will write the month, what theme or activity is being featured, and the applicable photo captions or journaling notes. Obviously the littlest ones (not-quite-writers) will need you & the teacher to help with that part.

*Note about the patterned paper: This is optional. Bring paper that will help enhance that month's theme, already cut into 2" x 8.5" strips (each child needs 2 strips for 2 pages). This will cover the top 2" of each page. Or if you don't bring in paper, they would just color in the simple pattern provided in the page design.

title page

Title Page

This should be done in the first month of the school year so as to get the child's signature. They'll write their signature again at the end of the year on that same page. In the younger grades, there is often a big improvement in the then-and-now for handwriting. As for the 4" x 6" photo, that can be whatever you want. A fun headshot you take or the official school portrait would be a natural fit for a title page.

Most importantly

Have fun with this project. Enjoy getting to know your child's classmates. Find joy in serving. Help the kids feel what you feel about personal history and personal expression through art and writing.

You Get What You Get

This reminder is applicable across the big board of life. Put this in your kitchen area to remind your kids to not be picky. Have it on your desk as a reminder to keep on keepin' on, even when you're not loving the next item on your to-do list. Wherever you use the print, may it always be a reminder to keep your chin up, try new things, and have a positive attitude about it all.

The 6" x 7.5" is Costco's greeting card size. The cool thing is that they let you upload your own JPG for that size... and... they'll provide the envelopes as well.

Disclaimer: I strongly recommend you verify this with your local Costco before placing an order. (My local Costco said, "Absolutely!" but I have yet to try it out personally.)

As with any cards, be sure to start with your envelope size. If you choose a card size and print all the cards without knowing for sure that you can get an envelope that will be a perfect fit, you may be shooting yourself in the foot. Get your envelopes first.

  • Bullet points: Just list some of your family's highlights and happenings in 2010. This is often a preferred format for reading.

  • Favorite quote or scripture that is particularly meaningful to your family at this time, or that emphasizes the reason for the season.
